Public Schools
With 14,570 employees, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is one of the
largest employers in Mecklenburg County. CMS provides education and resources to
some 116,853 students. CMS class size conforms to state requirements averaging
26 students in kindergarten through ninth grade and 29 students in tenth through

Private Schools
Approximately 17,000 students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade are
enrolled in private (non-public) schools in Mecklenburg County. As of June 1999,
there are some 60 independent schools with 1,684 full-time teachers within
